Oceania sits in the upper-premium bracket, above the large mass-market lines and below the true ultra-luxury operators like Silversea or Seabourn. The headline fare looks similar to premium lines, but Oceania includes all specialty restaurants and many soft drinks, which tilts the value. Upper-premium rather than ultra-luxury. They sit alongside Azamara and Viking Ocean, all noted for mid-size ships, strong itineraries and excellent food. Think refined and comfortable rather than the all-suite, all-inclusive luxury of Silversea or Seabourn. For booking purposes I'd call it light luxury.

Honestly, yes. The mid-size ships are easy to find your way around, the atmosphere is calm rather than frenetic, and the dining is a genuinely high bar to start your cruising life at. The only caveat is if you're travelling with teenagers who want aqua parks or non-stop nightlife — Oceania leans quieter than that.

Yes, and the line makes a real effort. Vista and Allura have dedicated solo studio staterooms with no single supplement; on the other ships solo cabins attract a supplement but I can hunt down the periodic 'solo saver' deals and solo-friendly itineraries to keep the cost reasonable.

Jeans are absolutely fine during the day around the ship, but the evening dress code in the Grand Dining Room and specialty restaurants is 'country club casual' — collared shirts, slacks, dresses or skirts. Most evenings are 'country club casual' — collared shirts and slacks for gents, dresses or trousers for ladies. There are occasional optional formal nights, which some guests dress up for and others skip without feeling out of place. Swimwear and shorts aren't permitted in dining rooms after 6pm.

Oceania applies a daily service charge to your onboard account — currently around $23 per person, per day for standard staterooms (a touch more for suites), though the exact figure changes so I'll confirm at the time of booking. You can prepay it, leave it as charged, or adjust at Guest Services. Bar drinks carry an automatic 18% service charge.

Oceania is deliberately low-key. Expect classical and jazz musicians, solo vocalists, enrichment lectures (often guest chefs or historians), trivia, the occasional West End-style show on the larger ships, plus libraries, art classes and cooking demos. It's not for those who want nightly Las Vegas-style productions.

It depends on your fare. Standard fares may include basic browsing Wi-Fi; the newer packages and higher cabin categories bundle faster premium Wi-Fi; and certain promotions add it as a perk. I always check what's in your specific fare so there are no surprises once you're on board.

Children are welcome but the programme is limited. Some ships run seasonal youth staff on sailings with enough children, but year-round dedicated kids' clubs aren't really Oceania's thing. If you're travelling as a family with under-12s, I'd usually steer you towards a line with stronger family facilities.

Pets aren't permitted on Oceania sailings, with the sole exception of registered service animals for guests with disabilities — and those need advance approval and documentation. If a service animal is travelling with you, let me know early so I can arrange everything with the line.

Very. The ships are SOLAS-compliant, drill every sailing, carry trained security staff and run 24-hour bridge and medical cover. Crime on board is rare, and the smaller passenger count means staff get to know you. As with any travel, sensible precautions and good insurance are the basics.

At embarkation you can typically bring a limited amount (the policy has shifted over the years, so I'll quote the exact wording for your sailing) — usually a bottle or two of wine or champagne per stateroom for in-cabin consumption. A corkage fee applies if you want to drink it in the restaurants. Hard spirits are not permitted to be brought aboard.

Generally you pay separately for shore excursions booked through Oceania. The exception is fares sold under the Oceania NOW or Premier packages, which sometimes bundle select tours or credits; either way, I'll get you the most inclusive fare available for your sailing.

Yes — independent exploring is welcome. Tender ports run on a ticket system if needed; otherwise you can wander off the ship and back freely within the published port hours. Booked excursions through Oceania are flagged through the cruise planner, but you're under no obligation to take them.

Your onboard account is settled in US dollars, charged to the credit card you register at check-in. For ports, local currency is best — I'll send you a per-port guide with currency, tipping conventions and how much cash to carry.

Every Oceania ship carries a dedicated medical centre staffed by a doctor and nurse(s), able to handle minor illness, injury and emergency stabilisation. Charges apply to your onboard account and are usually reclaimable through travel insurance, which is why I always recommend cruise-specific cover.

You'll be seen at the onboard medical centre. For anything serious the line coordinates port-side care or, in extreme cases, medical evacuation — which is why cruise travel insurance is so important. Charges go onto your onboard account and you claim back through your policy. I'll make sure your cover includes both.

Where should I sail?

It depends where you're going. Mediterranean is best from May to October, with shoulder seasons quieter and cheaper. Alaska runs May to September. The Caribbean's dry season is December to April. Northern Europe is best June to August. The destinations page has month-by-month guides.

When should I go?

Quite a few. The smaller Regatta Class ships draw shallow enough to reach St. Barts, Portofino, Honfleur, smaller Greek islands and remote Patagonian stops that megaships can't berth at. It's a genuine reason to choose them. Browse the destination list for the small-ship-only ports that appeal to you.

Most are between 7 and 14 nights. There are shorter taster cruises of 5–7 nights (especially repositioning legs), and extended Grand Voyages and World Cruise segments running anything from 30 to over 100 nights. The cruise planner is the best place to filter by duration.

For first pick of cabins and the best promotional fares, 9–18 months ahead is ideal — especially for popular Mediterranean and Alaska sailings. If you're flexible on date and cabin category, last-minute deals do appear inside 90 days. I track the fare movements and can hold cabins provisionally while you decide.

Penalties are tiered by how close to departure you cancel — typically nothing or low up to final payment, then rising through 90, 60, 30 and 14 days before sailing. The exact percentages depend on cruise length and fare type. I'll send your cancellation schedule in writing at the same time as your booking confirmation.
